Almond nails in most photographs are long. Long almond is a genuinely different shape with different rules, and applying those rules to short nails gives you something that looks like an accident rather than a choice.

Getting the shape right

Short almond means the sidewalls stay straight and only the final few millimetres taper toward a soft point. File from the side inward, in one direction, never sawing back and forth – sawing separates the layers of the nail plate and causes peeling.

The most common mistake is over-tapering. Take too much off the sides and you lose the structural strength that makes short nails worth having in the first place. The taper should be subtle enough that the nail still looks square-ish from directly above.

Solid colour: designs 1 to 8

This is where short almond is strongest. Full coverage, a glossy top coat, no art at all. Milky white, cherry red, mushroom, navy, deep plum, soft grey, chocolate brown, and a tinted clear.

A solid colour on a well-shaped short almond nail looks deliberate in a way that a half-finished design never does.

Minimal detail: designs 9 to 16

One accent nail. A single fine gold line at the base. Two small dots. A micro-french done in a colour rather than white – the coloured version reads modern where the classic white version now reads dated.

Velvet and cat-eye finishes do more work than painted art on short nails, because the entire effect lives in the polish rather than in a design you have no room to execute.

What to skip on short nails

Full french tips with a thick white line, which visually cut the nail in half. Anything with more than two elements per nail. And long flowing art that needs length to read as anything other than a smudge.
