How to Wear Butter Yellow When Summer Is Over

Butter yellow had a very good summer. The assumption is that it goes back into the wardrobe in September, and it does not need to. It simply needs different company.

Why it reads as summer

Butter yellow is almost always styled alongside white, pale blue and raffia. Those are the summer signals – not the yellow itself. Change what sits next to it and the colour moves season without any effort.

Five autumn pairings

With chocolate brown

The strongest option by some distance. Brown pulls the yellow warm and grounds it immediately. A butter yellow knit with brown trousers looks like October, not July.

With oxblood

Unexpected, and very good. Both shades are warm, so the pairing never clashes, and the depth contrast does all the work.

With grey flannel

Cools the yellow down and makes it read as tailoring rather than holiday dressing. The most office-appropriate of the five.

With forest green

A near-complementary pairing that stays soft because both shades are muted rather than saturated.

With cream and camel

The quiet route – butter yellow as the lightest step in a stack of warm neutrals. Nothing shouts, and the whole outfit reads expensive.

Fabric matters more than colour

The same yellow in linen reads July. In wool, cashmere or corduroy it reads October. If you own one butter yellow piece and it suddenly feels wrong, check the fabric before you blame the shade – it is almost always linen.
