22 September Outfits for That In-Between Weather

September is the fortnight where you leave the house in a coat and carry it home over your arm. Most transitional style advice answers this with more layers, which only means more to carry.

The better answer is fewer, smarter pieces that change temperature without changing outfit.

The principle: one outfit, two states

Every look below works with the outer layer on and with it off, and looks deliberate either way. That single test rules out a great deal – particularly anything where removing the top layer leaves you in something that reads as underwear or gym kit.

Slip dress base: outfits 1 to 6

The most adaptable thing you own in September. Over a long-sleeved fitted tee, under a cardigan, with boots rather than sandals. Bare-armed at three in the afternoon, fully layered by six, and the dress itself never changes.

Trouser base: outfits 7 to 13

Wide-leg trousers with a fitted knit. The move that makes this work is adding a shirt worn open over the top rather than tucked underneath – it functions as a light jacket and removes without disturbing the outfit.

Denim base: outfits 14 to 18

Straight-leg jeans, a fine-gauge knit, and a trench light enough to carry without looking like luggage. Fine-gauge matters here – a chunky knit under a coat is too warm indoors and looks bulky.

Skirt base: outfits 19 to 22

A midi skirt with boots and a knit. This is the combination that stops looking like summer the instant you change the shoes, without changing anything else.

The three pieces worth buying

A cardigan cut long enough to close over a dress. One pair of ankle boots in a neutral that is not black – brown or oxblood extends far further than you would expect. And a trench in a colour other than beige, which instantly stops the outfit reading as a uniform.
